Twelve-year-old Nandu lives at the King’s elephant stable in the Borderlands of Nepal. He is being raised by the head of the stable, Subba-sahib, and Devi Kali, a female elephant, after they found him at the age of two living in the jungle with a pack of wild dogs. One day, the government threatens to close the stable. With help from his teacher, Father Autry, and a few of his friends, Nandu devises a plan to save the stable. Will his plan succeed? I enjoyed reading this book because it is very different from the books I normally read. That being said, it took me longer than usual to finish, and I almost gave up on it. I’m so glad I finished it, though. It definitely meets the requirements for being a diverse book, and now I am interested in learning more about elephants and Nepal. It’s worth a try!
